A global study that assesses the temperature change in ocean currents has made two findings – one surprising, the other less so. The unsurprising outcome is that as the Earth’s temperature rises, so does the temps in a collection of major ocean currents; the surprise is that those currents are warming faster than the globe as a whole.
According to the study, published this week in Nature Climate Change, a pattern of warming in the ocean’s long-distance currents has now been identified near Australia, Japan, Africa, and North America.

Moreover, the warming is also sending the currents “polewards”, meaning that species migrations already observed in Australia (in which many species are moving southwards at as much as a degree per year) are almost certain to happen on a global scale.
The study, "Enhanced warming over the global subtropical western boundary currents", aims to identify whether, and to what degree, changes in ocean currents may occur due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing.
The currents are important because on their thousands-of-kilometer journeys redistributing heat from equatorial regions to the mid-latitudes, they also release both heat and moisture into the atmosphere.
The currents could be thought of as heat pumps on a global scale, collecting heat nearer to the equator, and dropping it off – along with both moisture and the energy to, among other things, drive storms – further away.
According to the study, the currents are hot-spots in the climate-change picture, warming considerably faster than the average warming of the ocean. Over all the data sets, which comprise the Gulf Stream, Kurshio Current, East Australian Current, Brazil Current, and Aguhlas Current, the average warming over a century has been around 1.2°C, while the global mean rise in temperatures is 0.62°C for the same period.
One of the paper’s authors, CSIRO’s Dr. Wenju Cai, told the ABC’s The World Today that the change is significant because it’s an observation on a global scale. He told the program that while warming of the East Australian Current had already been documented, this study demonstrates that it’s not just happening “in an isolated part of the Tasman Sea.”
Because the change is global, and because the various currents have warmed pretty much in step, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Michael McPhaden said the synchronized change in ocean circulation is “most likely [caused by] anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing."
The scale of the change, at two to three times global temperature rises, is one thing that surprised McPhaden, because “we did not think there was such a tight connection between ocean circulation on these small scales near the western boundaries.”
To try and account for natural climate variability, the researchers present a second analysis in which the change in the currents is presented in two periods: from 1900 to 1949, and from 1949 to 2008.
The picture is far less uniform, the study finds, in the first 50 years, with some currents (the Kuriosho, Gulf Stream, and Anguhlas) rising noticeably, while the East Australian and Brazil currents did not. This, they say, might reflect the lower impact of greenhouse-gas forcing in the earlier period, such that some fluctuations were smaller than natural variability. ®

Update: Since this story went live, Dr Cai has provided further information via e-mail to The Register regarding the source data used in the study.
Before regular ocean temperature monitoring was put in place, wind speeds – which are fed by energy from the ocean – are the key proxy for ocean temperature. Hence, regarding data towards the 1900 start date of the projection, Dr Cai wrote, “Much of the early changes are inferred from winds, for which we have more observations.”
While “reconstructed data certainly have limitations,” he wrote, winds “are a major driver of climate change.”
Importantly, he noted that the outputs of this study agree with predictions from other sources: “Climate models project a synchronized warming under various emission scenarios”.
This suggests a secondary, but still important, result of this study: it serves to help validate other climate models.
Data comes from a variety of sources, Dr Cai said: “Since 1950, we have started to [get] good data, though the coverage is sparse, and the amount increases dramatically since 1979 (the satellite era).
“Since 2003, we have built a network of 3,000 floats around the globe, which measure SST [sea surface temperature] every 10 days.
“However, for over 60 years, CSIRO has continuous monthly measurements of ocean temperature of Maria Island in Tasmania, which show a warming rate of up to 3°C.” ®

TAKING NOTICE OF GLOBAL WARMING

Nobody seems to take notice of global warming, so today again we are
writing a post in my blog called, Mother Nature Challenge and we are talking
about global warming; it is something that cannot be avoided, because as soon
as I/we am/are in the open meaning outside or in the country, we notice that
something is different from the way it used to be when we were young. We seem
all to notice that the weather is not what it used to be, it changes suddenly
from hot to cold or vice verse, there are extreme spell of dry weather for a
long time, then it starts to rain and soon that welcome rain becomes too much
because it rains for days and it may even flood us, like it did last year here
in Brisbane, now because of all these changes in the weather pattern, one has
reasons to believe that we might have made unwelcome changes to the weather; so
we really need to think what mankind needs to do. We have been advised from
many learned people and if we just look in the Internet the reasons are
explained very well from the expert, Just look at a small part of this article
that I have just copied hereunder to see what I mean, and I quote:

done something that is against Mother Nature liking, therefore, now it is time
that we challenge ourselves and try to meet the challenge that Mother Nature
seems to throw at us? That is do not make more mistakes, because if you do you
will be paying dearly even with our lives, because it may come a time when it
will be very hard to live well on this planet earth.

When will the giant economies wake up and do their duty for all humanity?
We the people of the world seem to worry a lot about climatic warming and the changes that will follow, but the people that count are still thinking first about how to make more money with the mighty dollars, it is time they wake up, we are saying this because of some news we have just read. Hereunder is part of what was reported:

The Climate Ethics Campaign — which kicked off with a Capitol Hill news conference headlining Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) — comes as negotiators are struggling to make progress at U.N. climate talks in Durban, South Africa.

“We believe it’s time to talk about our moral obligation to prevent the human suffering -created by climate change, to safeguard the poor and most vulnerable communities from harm they did not create, and to protect the natural environment that is the source of all life,” said campaign coordinator Bob Doppelt, executive director of the Resource Innovation Group, a nonprofit association affiliated with Willam¬ette University.
But the call also comes at a moment when Congress has shown little appetite for tackling the issue of global warming. There is no serious drive to pass a cap on greenhouse gas emissions or a more-modest federal renewable energy standard.
The climate talks are the first in years with not a single member of Congress attending. Only a handful of congressional aides are making the trip.)

What are the top ten environmental problems facing the world today?

A recent scientific paper published in Nature attempted to answer this question, with a twist. The Earth has spent roughly the last 12,000 years in a period of unusual climate stability known as the Holocene era. To put this era in perspective, all major human civilizations have existed since the beginning of the Holocene. In fact, humans have only practiced agriculture for roughly the last 10,000 years. This all-important development, which allowed civilizations from the ancient Sumerians to our own to thrive, was made possible by the stable climate of the Holocene
Unfortunately, this stable, pleasant period is currently coming to an end, and there is strong reason to believe that this is not the result of a change in the natural cycles of the Earth, but rather that the change is caused by human activity.
The authors of Planetary Boundaries: Exploring the Safe Operating Space for Humanity, attempted to identify the most serious environmental threats the human race currently faces, and identify the potential "tipping points" beyond which the pleasant Holocene era would disappear and the Earth's natural resources would be seriously depleted.

10. The Stratospheric Ozone Layer
The ozone layer filters out the most harmful wavelengths of UVB ultraviolet radiation from the sun before it reaches the earth's surface. A depleted ozone layer would mean increased rates of skin cancer for humans, as well as damage to plants and ecosystems. Ozone depletion received a lot of attention in the 1970's and 80's when scientists discovered a giant and growing "hole" in the ozone layer above Antarctica.
Fortunately, the scientists were able to convince the world community to act quickly to limit the production of ozone depleting substances such as CFCs and halons and the problem of ozone depletion today seems to be on the path to successful resolution, though due to the long lifetime of ozone depleting compounds the Antarctic ozone "hole" is not expected to recover completely until 2050 and the overall levels of ozone in the atmosphere will recover to pre-1980 levels only about 2060-2075.
The goal for the future will be to maintain the progress we have already made on this issue.
9. Land Use Changes
The authors of Planetary Boundaries chose Land Use Changes as one of their top environmental concerns, which I felt was a slightly redundant choice, because changes in land use, for the most part, have the same negative effects as several of their other choices. For example, loss of wildlife habitat leads to loss of biodiversity. Depending on what the habitat is replaced with, the change can also lead to air or water pollution from factories and farm fields, depleted groundwater reserves due to impervious surfaces such as city roads, and carbon emissions from almost any human activity you could name.
Land Use Changes are also particularly difficult to define a "tipping point" for because their effects vary so significantly, so that in fact the exact environmental impact of one land use change is different from the impact of every other land use change ever made.
I feel a less redundant and easier to measure choice might have been soil depletion due to erosion, desertification, and unsound agricultural practices, among other factors.

Our atmosphere is but a thin layer of gas around a huge bulky planet. This gaseous outer ring and its greenhouse effect make life on Earth possible–and could destroy life as we know it.
The sun is the Earth’s primary energy source, a burning star so hot that we can feel its heat from over 150 million kilometers away.

About one third of this solar energy is reflected back into the universe by shimmering glaciers, water and other bright surfaces. Two thirds, however, is absorbed by the Earth, thus warming land, oceans, and the atmosphere.

Much of this heat radiates back out into space, but some of it is stored in the atmosphere. This process is called the greenhouse effect. Without it, the Earth’s average temperature would be a chilly -18 degrees Celsius, despite the sun’s constant energy supply.

In a world like this, life on Earth would probably have never emerged from the sea. Thanks to the greenhouse effect, however, we enjoy a comfortable average temperature of 14 degrees Celsius.

So, how does it work?

Radiator in space
Only about half of all solar energy that reaches the Earth is infrared radiation, which causes warming. The other half only translates into heat once it hits Earth and is reflected back into space as infrared radiation.

This transformation of solar radiation into infrared radiation is crucial, because infrared radiation can be absorbed by the atmosphere. Like a radiator in the middle of a room, our atmosphere radiates this heat in all directions.
How is this radiation absorbed?

Sunrays enter a greenhouse, heat up the ground, which, in turn, heats up the air inside the greenhouse. The glass roof and walls trap that warm air and temperatures increase.

Earth has no glass walls, but it does have the atmosphere, and within the atmosphere it has greenhouse gases.

Ninety-eight percent of the Earth’s atmosphere is made up of nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. But they do not absorb much infrared radiation, and don't contribute to the greenhouse effect.

Greenhouse gases like water vapour, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons do absorb heat, and thus increase atmospheric temperatures.

Why more Australian are saying Yes to a price on carbon pollution

THIS is a confounding report that offers something for nearly everyone in the carbon pricing debate, except for one notable group: those who claim that Australia is acting ahead of the world on climate change.
The Productivity Commission was asked to examine what key countries were doing to cut emissions and express it as a number - an ''effective'' carbon price imposed on key industries when policies such as emissions trading schemes and renewable energy subsidies were added up. Its chairman, Gary Banks, decided almost immediately that this was impossible.
Why? Because attempting to turn more than 1000 policies - the US, for example, has more than 300 overlapping and contradictory schemes - into one number for each country would be meaningless.

Looking at what is happening these days in Japan, one should wonder whether humanity as a whole needs to learn how to be more careful, in order to avoid anything that may ruin our planet earth. We need to think that this planet is the only planet that we have, so let us make sure that we do not ruin it forever. We really need to learn from what is happening today in Japan, because if we don’t we may indeed slowly ruin our planet for good.
It seems to me that the most important thing is to keep the planet going as natural as possible, so that we may avoid any disruption to the normal ways of Mother Nature. Having said that it does not mean that we should not do anything at all, and that we should live the ways we have lived for thousands of years before now, because as we all know that would be impossible to do.
Humanity needs to learn how to find ways to generate more electric power using natural ways which will not damage the planet at all. Apart from what we are already using now to generate power, which may cause one way or the other some lasting unwanted changes in the atmosphere, which may cause some unwanted events, but I have to say that the greatest danger of them all is the nuclear power station, because it can get out of control and become very dangerous, like it is happening in Japan right now.
So, perhaps we should listen to the green party and follow their beliefs so to speak, therefore, we should try to generate power with wind turbine and solar panels, which do not disturb Mother Nature at all and are free for all to use, as they are of a natural occurrence.
Humanity needs to learn how to do all these things soon or later, even if they would be more costly than the power we are generating now. We have to keep in mind that human lives are more important than any money we can save in the beginning.
So, let us hope that this very unpleasant disaster that is unfolding in Japan right now may help the world to understand that going nuclear is not the right thing to do and let us hope that the best mind in the world solve this problem and save Japan the best way they can. Then they should start thinking how to generate power in a safer way.

Instead, the commission has cobbled together its policy stocktake by asking: what are the current cost and cost effectiveness of major carbon policies in the nine countries investigated?
Most of the overarching findings are not surprising. It finds that all the countries are acting, and acting in a range of ways that vary markedly in effectiveness. Few policies have done much to cut emissions. But the commission finds that emissions trading schemes, as the multiparty climate committee proposes for Australia, have been the cheapest way to achieve cuts.
Beyond that, most of the analysis is so laden with caveats they add little to the debate. The commission added up the cost of cleaner energy subsidies and calculated it as a proportion of each country's GDP. Germany (up to 0.33 per cent) was easily spending the largest chunk. Britain (0.10) came next, following by Australia (0.05) and China (0.4), with the US (0.02) further back.
What does this tell us? On its own, not much.
So the commission has a stab at how much it cost for every tonne of emissions cut from the power industry in 2010. Australia made only a small cut in emissions - 12.5 million tonnes - at a relatively expensive price of between $44 and $99 per tonne.
Again, this places it in the middle of the pack, but the key comparison here is not with other countries - most of which were equally or less efficient - but with how Australia would have fared if it had a carbon tax or ETS. The commission estimates the same cut in emissions would have been much cheaper for industry: just $9 a tonne.
Of the countries examined, none had broad carbon taxes, but some tax fossil fuels. Britain taxes energy use; Japan is increasing a tax on crude oil and petroleum products.
Several countries have, or are considering an ETS. Britain and Germany are part of the European scheme, which covers power stations, iron and steel works, oil refineries and a range of factories - about 40 per cent of the continent's emissions all up. Its carbon price last month was $22-$23 a tonne.
In Britain, the ETS has led to some switching from coal to gas-fired power, cut emissions by 19 per cent and pushed electricity prices up 17 per cent. In Germany, the impact of the ETS has been swamped by generous subsidies.
Japan and South Korea have delayed proposed schemes; China has announced it will hold a limited pilot scheme.
In the US, where a national carbon price is off the agenda, the Environment Protection Agency has begun requiring polluters to hold a permit to emit, and will soon announce proposals for standards that will apply to permit holders. All countries examined have some form of renewable energy target or subsidies, and they always cost more in emissions reduction terms than a carbon price.
The commission's investigation is significantly weakened by the policies it didn't look at: research and development spending, energy and fuel efficiency schemes, changes in public transport.
And it squibs it on recommending a starting carbon price - there is just too much information missing.

Humanity needs to learn

Looking at what is happening these days in Japan, one should wonder whether humanity as a whole needs to learn how to be more careful, in order to avoid anything that may ruin our planet earth. We need to think that this planet is the only planet that we have, so let us make sure that we do not ruin it forever. We really need to learn from what is happening today in Japan, because if we don’t we may indeed slowly ruin our planet for good.
It seems to me that the most important thing is to keep the planet going as natural as possible, so that we may avoid any disruption to the normal ways of Mother Nature. Having said that it does not mean that we should not do anything at all, and that we should live the ways we have lived for thousands of years before now, because as we all know that would be impossible to do.
Humanity needs to learn how to find ways to generate more electric power using natural ways which will not damage the planet at all. Apart from what we are already using now to generate power, which may cause one way or the other some lasting unwanted changes in the atmosphere, which may cause some unwanted events, but I have to say that the greatest danger of them all is the nuclear power station, because it can get out of control and become very dangerous, like it is happening in Japan right now.
So, perhaps we should listen to the green party and follow their beliefs so to speak, therefore, we should try to generate power with wind turbine and solar panels, which do not disturb Mother Nature at all and are free for all to use, as they are of a natural occurrence.
Humanity needs to learn how to do all these things soon or later, even if they would be more costly than the power we are generating now. We have to keep in mind that human lives are more important than any money we can save in the beginning.
So, let us hope that this very unpleasant disaster that is unfolding in Japan right now may help the world to understand that going nuclear is not the right thing to do and let us hope that the best mind in the world solve this problem and save Japan the best way they can. Then they should start thinking how to generate power in a safer way.
