My farm life when I was young.
Dear readers, this
post is the continuation of our last post, let me tell you my farm life, from my farm life experience and
views, so, here again I am lamenting about my early childhood life in the farm,
which has been one of those facts of life that to most of us could happen
during our life, so whatever I am telling you here is just the story of my life
and nothing else. Now we can also say that no matter how negative a story could
be and there are plenty of negative in my life story, there must be also some
positive things that could be used later in life, when we can; therefore, let
me tell you this other chapter of my life story, the way that I have lived it
and how I see it now.
I believe that to
give you a better picture overall, of what life was like in the farms of my
native town of Genzano di Lucania when I was young, I need also to tell you
about many other things as well and the town itself, and then the ways of how
people used to live in those times and what was happening at the time when I
was young. So, let me talk about the town and the population first.
From my memory, I
believe that the town of Genzano di Lucania early in the twentieth century had
reached a population of about 7,000 inhabitants, in the forties when I was
young the population had grown to about 8,000 and reached 8,389 in 1951
inhabitants, and this is the highest number of people on record that I know of.
Even though some people believe that there were near 10,000 people living in
Genzano. But, today the number of people that used to live in Genzano does not
matter anymore, because in the seventies it had shrunk to only 5,500 inhabitants
or there about. The reasons for this population shrinkage, it was because lots
of people had to emigrate somewhere in those times. The reasons why they had to
emigrate will be fully understood, when I explain what happened to the rural
community of this town including myself. Today at the present time while I am
writing this article the first time, the town of Genzano has 6200 inhabitants
or there about.
My native town of
Genzano is known as Genzano di Lucania to distinguish it from another Italian
town Genzano di Roma. Anyhow this Genzano di Lucania these days has a territory
of about 21,000 Hectares of land if I remember right, and about 80% of this
land is arable land, and it is mostly used to grow wheat, especially durum
wheat; the rest of the land is used to grow grapes vines or olive trees and
other farm produce, and there are also reserves or grazing land; as anyone can
see from what I have said here, this town owes its wealth to the rural
community that produces wheat, because this town is well known to produce lots
of very high quality durum wheat, which the mills that make pasta rush to buy
it when it’s harvest time. Now even if the mills rush to buy this durum wheat,
the price of wheat is not high, so the farmers make only enough money to keep
going and one must think that it takes one year to produce and harvest a crop
of wheat, so it is not that good for the farmers; there are also other things
that must be taken into consideration, as I will continue to explain while I am
writing my life story.
Anyhow as I have
already mentioned above, there are lots of other produce from the farms also,
because we used to have mixed farming, but these produce are used locally, and
if some of them are sold out of the town, they are not a great deal to make any
difference.
At the time when I
was young there were lots of small farms in Genzano, and although the most
important and the largest crop that brought in the money was durum wheat, they
had to practice mixed farming for their own needs, which I will try to explain
how the farms were run at those times when I was young.
I believe that I
have said enough in this post, so, see you next time when I will be writing
about, how the farms were run.

Let me tell you my farm life
Dear readers, this
post is the continuation of our last post, farm life can be very hard. Now, let
me continue to tell you my farm life experience; perhaps you remember that in
one of our posts called, The heritage story, we have written again about the
town that I came from and some of the ways of life of those times including my
own life, so, now I would like to go back and continue to tell you all about my
own life again that I lived in this town, starting from the very beginning,
well not really from the very beginning, because I have already told you part
of my life story in the articles: An old man life story; a man life journey; My
life my struggles; an old man story; My farm life experience; Simple man life
observation and then more articles about Genzano the town I came from.
Therefore, now I am
going back to tell you my life story, starting from the time when I had to live
school and go to help in the farm, I was about eleven years old when I went to
work in the farm. Today you may find that at that age one is just too young to
do any work, but in those times that was the way that most people accepted as
being normal. I know that it was unfortunate for me just because I and a few
other young men were going to be the last of this old way of life in the farms,
because since then things have changed a lot and life for young people now is
better, since for a start they don’t start working as young as we did then;
because soon after I started to work in the farm, laws were passed from the
government of those days, that is was compulsory to go to school until youths
were 14 years old, therefore I and a few others were the last youths that
started to work so early in life. For this reason, it is going to be hard to
compare anything, because things have changed, that is if we want to really
compare anything that we do today with those times.
But just to say one
thing or two; can you just imagine a youth today that has just turned eleven or
twelve or even thirteen or fourteen to have to feed and look after the farms
animals in winter time as we did, when they are in the stable because outside
is very cold. You have to go out to bring in straw and hay to feed those
animals, even when it is very cold, and then you have to take them to the well
to water them, you have also to groom them and clean the stable every day, it is
a very boring job to say the least. I am pretty sure that today youths would
refuse to do it, just because there is no joy or pride for doing it. Of course,
there are many other things that we did in the farms, but they are just as hard
and boring, so, there is no point in telling them. I believe also that perhaps
I have said enough to give you an idea of what life was like in the farms of
those days.
So, now let me tell
you more about my life. I want to tell it, just because it is my own life
story; some people may think that I might have copied my life story from
somewhere else, but I can assure you that I have not, and if it resembles
somebody else story it is just a coincidence. And does this really matter?
You see, I have
only one life to live and if I want to be true to myself and the rest of the
world I have to tell my life story just the way I have lived it, so, there are
no ways that similarities can be completely avoided. So, let me start telling
you, my farm life experience as I lived it.
Anyhow in our
future articles that I am going to write, I am going to show you how I have
made an effort to break away from all those negative and painful things that
were holding me back in the past, just because I did live in the farms when I
was very young, see our article called, Hello my world. So, see you in our next article, which is going to be another one of,
my farm life chapter. I hope my life story is interesting enough for you to
read.
Anyhow, I am going
to post a special post next time, and then we will return to tell you my life
story in, my farm life chapter.
See you soon.

Farm life can be very hard
Dear readers, this
post is the continuation of our last post, my farm life views, where we were
telling you about, my farm life when I was very young, where we were lamenting
that nobody would appreciate us farmers, while we were working hard for
everybody else. Anyhow, we were saying in our last post, that people that live
in the farms live a very hard and lonely life; in the past farming was even
harder than it is today, because today even the farmers have lots of machines
that helps them farming, they are also a lot closer to the other communities
than they used to be, because they can travel easily from their farms to town,
they have their mobiles, and other electronic devices that helps them stay in
touch with the rest of the world; anyhow, we have to think that wherever you
are, and whatever you do life can be very hard sometime, when that happen we have
to try to overcome those difficulties the best way we can.
Having this view in
mind and having lived a rather hard life myself, I look at today world and
wonder when I see these young people struggling, while they are really living
in the middle of plenty, but then I realize that they do not see it that way,
so, they want you to believe that they are living a hard life, when in reality
they are not, if we compare it to the ways of life in the old times. Therefore,
I cannot help thinking that things in the world have changed a lot for the
better, therefore, I cast my mind back to the times when I was young, then I
wonder what is wrong with the youths today, why they do not see all the good
things around them that are available to them. I know that some of them do, but
a lot of them don't.
Having said that,
now it would be good if we could compare today life to the days when I was
young; So, let me tell you why life was harder when I was young, especially for
those youths that like myself ended in a disadvantaged position, we were working
in the farms when we were very young: not only we were in a disadvantaged
position then, and working just to earn a small living that consisted of just
plain but wholesome food and some clothing on our back, but what was hurting
most of us young would be farmers, it was the fact that we were not appreciated
from the rest of the town community, only because we were not as good as the
rest of the community with our communication skills, owing to the fact, that we
were busy working and living an isolated life in the farm, where complex
communication skills are not taught, because you don’t need them for farming,
and also we did not ware flashy garments to show off, when we went to town and
met the young town people, who seemed so clever well dressed and they knew
everything that there was to be known.
The reason that I
have been telling you all this stuff, is that, it explains better how I felt
then and how I feel even now, about my life in the farm in those days when I
was young, and I hope that there is no misunderstanding, that this was a hard
and boring life, I am writing this article today, because I would like to point
out to you, that my life experience in the farm of those days, has a very clear
meaning to anybody that happens to read my life story, even if it is only a
plain and boring life story that I am able to tell you here.
But I believe that there
is also another side of this life story, because what I have just said, makes
me reflect about what the elders of my time were telling me, which was in
effect that life was much harder when they were young. This attitude of those
elders makes me think and ask myself. Is this the ways that life looks like
when we get old? Or it is indeed that the way of life is changing for the
better today I wonder? Anyhow, I will continue to tell you my life story here
under, and you can decide for yourself, and also when you read my next few
posts, where I will continue to talk about my farm life experience.
This post is
becoming too long, so, see you in our next post. Let me tell you my farm life.
See you soon.

My farm life views
Dear readers, this
post is the continuation of our previous post ‘breaking away from my farm life’
which are all part of ‘An old man life story, so, let me continue. Now, even
though we have been talking about breaking away from my farm life, and my farm
life experience in our previous posts. Now, I would have liked to go straight
to the point again, telling you all about my own personal life experience in
the farm when I was very young, which is the most important experience during
my whole young life, and which I ought to tell you as it was, because of the
ways that it has affected me, if I want to make my point about my young life
experience in the farm; since it is my first life experience in the real world,
and therefore the most important one.
So, just to make my
point here, I have to tell you that my first real job in the farm was, which
was that I had to look after a small flock of sheep, I was about 11 years old
at that time, so to be in charge of those animals was a big ask for a small boy
even then, and when we look at the standard of life that we have today, it
looks even worse, but somehow I did my job anyhow, after that job I had to do
many other things. All these things put together, I should tell you right away
that it has affected me for the rest of my life in a negative way, because I
was placed in a disadvantaged position right from the start of my young life,
as I have already mentioned before many times.
Now, while I am
writing and thinking about my younger life, at the same time I cannot help to
wonder how the young people of today would react if they find themselves in a
disadvantaged position as I was then. So, I ask myself again and again would
today young People have enough positive thinking to overcome the hard life that
would be thrown at them, or would they just keep protesting, and then run away
from the problems ahead of them; as the young people usually do these days? But
there is also something else, I have noted that today young people like only to
get in touch with other people through their mobiles, they don’t like to talk
to people face to face, and they avoid all sorts of problems if they can.
Therefore, I wonder what they would have done, if they would have ended up in
the same position as I was, as there were not many people around to talk to and
above all there wasn’t any devise that you could talk to or listen to, like
today we can talk on the mobile phones, you see life was very different then.
Anyhow, during our
lives I have learned that life means to us whatever we want life to mean to us,
and, at different times may have different meanings for every one of us. Today I
have concluded that even if we live a hard life, we need to be positive during
our life, and that is what we have to do all the time, be positive if we can. We
need to do that if we want to overcome our difficulties. My own life is a very
commune good example, as you are going to see while you read these articles.
You see, just because I have been positive during my whole life, even when
things went the wrong way many times, but I just kept going on the best way I
could, because that was the only thing that I could do at that time. The
reality of life is that we are forced to do whatever life throws at us, so, we
better do it willingly, without upsetting ourselves too much.
We should believe
that from our drawbacks we can always learn something positive, and if these
positive thoughts are added up, one can find a way to use them. You see today
in my old age I am even able to write these posts here and hubs in Hub pages,
in a language that is not my mother tongue, this might not be a great deal to
some people, but it helps me to think that I am not that hopeless fellow that I
was when I was young, because I have kept positive and tried to learn whenever
I had the chance, I hope that you see what I mean?
Now that I have
explained the position that I am in today, which one could say that it is a
sharp contrast to the ways I have been living when I was very young. Anyhow,
today to continue to tell you my farm life story, I believe that I have to
describe to you first of all what the farms were like in those days, and also how
the farmers used to run them in a traditional manner at the time when I was
young. And I want also to point out to you that, the farmers and their workers
were then and are still nowadays, the most important contributors of the
welfare of this rural town of Genzano di Lucania, you see, the rural
communities wherever you go in the world, they are still those people that grow
food for the rest of the other communities, therefore growing any sort of food
will always be necessary, for these reasons the people that grow food are very
important contributors to the rest of the town community; this would also apply
to our rural town of, Genzano di Lucania. But there seems to be a problem
between the farmers and the town people, because the rest of the town
communities, they don’t seem to recognize enough the farmer contributions, this
attitude gives rise to some malcontent and make life harder for the farming
people. We all should know that farmers are hardworking simple people that have
no much time to think about frivolous things, just for the sake of showing off
to other people their knowledge, like most people of the rest of the community
practice everywhere, and this is one of the problems between these communities,
but the farmers knowing that they know only how to farm they keep on farming,
even when they know that they are not being appreciated. They are down to earth
people.
Anyhow I believe
that this post is becoming too long, so, see you soon in our next post, Farm
life can be very hard.

Breaking away from my farm life
Dear readers, this post is the continuation of our last post, my harsh
destiny, so, let us continue our life story. Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.
For about twelve
years I lived this farm life, as I have explained in our previous posts.
Anyhow, the only time that I had a real break from farming was when I was
called to serve in the army, which in Italy was/is a compulsory service to the
country, which every able young male must serve when one turns twenty-one years
old or soon after that. Then when the army released me I migrated to Australia,
and I was then in my early twenties. I was young and not afraid to do hard
work. I would do anything at all in Australia, since I did not have any
qualification, and I would work hard if I had to, since I had learned in the
farm that we needed to work hard to earn our living.
But let me say just
a few words about this service in the Italian army of those times, being in the
compulsory Italian army is a hard life for anybody, for a start you are not
paid or you are paid so little that you believe that you are not paid at all; and
then, everybody laments about everything especially about the discipline, as
for myself I did not find it very hard like some recruits complain it is, but
at the same time it was, because you do what you are told to do, at the same
time you learn something new because you are exposed to a different way of
living. But the hardest part of it all is that the compulsory army of those
times, they didn’t pay us, we only got free food free clothes and just enough
money to by some cigarettes if one was a smoker. Anyhow it is good to be in the
army and learn a new way of life, it makes you feel better when that is over
and done with; some of the old people think that after you have been in the
army, you have really become a man of the world, because of that extra
experience that you learn in the army.
But, let me go back
to tell you about my life in the farm and what it did to me. Because as I have
already mentioned before, the farm life of those times was not what one would
prescribe for a young man like me, if one wanted me as a young man to develop
my potential properly, so that, I could be ready to meet the challenge of life
when I would be older, in all sorts of communities not just farming a small
farm.
But you see, as we
have already mentioned, at the time when all this happened to me, no one could
have ever thought, of the forth coming changing world, and of the difficulties
that I and some of the other boys, which shared the same fate as me would have
to face in later life. Just because the way of life happened to change so much
and so fast, when we were young.
Now, in order to
understand how unfair it was, for me and for those youths of my time who ended
up in the farms like myself, I have to convey to you the different set up of
this town of Genzano; the way that people separate each other in classes, not
because they like to be different to each other, but because they are
different, and therefore they think and talk in different ways, so, they group
themselves with their equal, because they feel more at ease that way: But in
reality they are somehow all equal, as all the groups need each other soon or
later.
There are reasons
to believe that this way of life would usually happen everywhere else in the
world in small towns, where there are two main groups of people in every
community: There are those who live directly from the land, which are called
the rural community, and those who work in town in all sorts of jobs, which
would be called just town’s people and they include; shop keepers, doctors,
vets, craftsmen, clerks, schools and school teachers, priests, policemen,
(carabinieri which are Italian policemen), guardians, and every other sort of
jobs that one can think of, in order to run a town properly; and then all the
rest of the population, like whole families and women and children, so that a
town would be self-reliant.
Anyhow, at a
certain stage of my life I started to become aware, that I had to break away
from this type of farm living, because a lot of things were changing and we
didn’t earn enough from the small farm that we had, so, it was time for us
young would have been farmers to change also, but let me say a bit more about
my farm life views and the town I have come from, because, it would be better
for my readers to understand what was going on at those times, in the fifties
and there about. After all, those old times will not come back anymore, and it
would be good to have at least a sort of record written here, in order to
remember how those times were.
So in my next
article, let me continue to talk about my farm life views, followed by several
other articles about my farm life, and then talk about the town of Genzano and
its communities, to explain better how those times were, in the fifties and
earlier; not only because I want to tell you my life story, but also because a
sort of record is being written and kept, in these internet articles that could
be available to the public for a long time in the future.
So, see you next
time in my next article, my farm life views.

My harsh own destiny

My harsh destiny
Most of us believe that we have our own destiny, if that is true, then my own destiny has been a harsh one. It has started from when I was a child and all my life, I have always worked hard with no much enjoyment in between. Even today there are so many problems, that I don't even like to tell other people willingly, but sometimes we have to do it, and tell our story the way it is.

Even today there are so many problems, that I don't even like to tell other people willingly, but sometimes we have to do it, and tell our story the way it is.
My harsh destiny
Dear readers, after complaining about the programs rip off, we are going
back to post our usual posts, so, let me continue with my harsh destiny. Click edit above to add content to
this empty capsule.
As I was saying in
our last post about, farm life unfair situation, we are born in a family that
somehow decides also our destiny, because of the way that family lives and have
lived perhaps for centuries; but there is more to say about our destiny,
because some of us would like to believe that we are born with a destiny to
fulfil, and if it is so, then my destiny is not a bright one, because from the
beginning of my life I have had a hard life and this has continued during my
life, perhaps it will still continue until I die, but anyhow let us go back to
my life story in the farm, whether it was my destiny or not.
As I have already
mentioned above about my own farm life when I was young, and I reckon and feel
that it was really unfair to my personal self, and to those youths that had to
live in the farm as I did, this fact of life I will continue to describe to you
at length and in depth as I keep writing on, since the main point that I want
to make here is to show you how I had to struggle and to suffer while I was
living in the farm, and even later on in the future as we will see, from these
articles that I am writing. In fact, for me life was going to be much harder
than I thought, since that way of life which I had lived in the farm had left
me so far backward, because of that isolation that existed in the farms, I even
lacked in local general knowledge about the people of the town, and also in
communication skills including all those nice things that a person says and
does, which would make that same person attractive to the rest of the
community.
Here I have also to
say that this early disadvantaged way of life, it has affected me greatly for
the rest of my life, and although I have tried to improve myself during my
life, I have never been able to catch up with the rest of the world completely.
So that, I feel it within me even now, as if I will never be completely satisfied
with myself, because I think that I could have been better off, if I had a
different and better way of life when I was young to start with.
But since what’s
been done is done, since one cannot go back and do it in a different way,
therefore, I am/was stuck with it. Therefore, I had to put up with my backward
way of life; and I had to accept that the only possible way that was left for
me to earn a living for the rest of my life, had to be that I had to do hard
physical work, which I did in a way or another and this hard work has helped me
to overcome some of my drawbacks. From this life experience one could say that
we should always try to improve ourselves and work hard for it, even when it is
hard for us to find an easy way of life, if we are able to keep this attitude
and work hard during our lives, we would be able to overcome many issues that
could otherwise run us down completely.
Now let us continue
to tell my life story; anyhow, at the time when all this hard and boring life
was happening to us, including all those young people which used to live and
work in this town’s farms, doing this same work as I did it all seemed normal
to us, because even our forebears before us did that, as they had all lived
this same way for centuries before us.
As I was saying
also my forbears used to live in this town that I was born, and in which I had
to live my youth just like them. But, most of my youth and I mean the most
important years of my young life, which is the time when a youth would be
better off to stay in a society and learn the ways of that society, and at the
same time try to find out the meanings of life, which would help him to learn
how to deal with his life in the future in the society that we would be living
in; all those years were spent to live in our family farm and not in the town
itself, and this did put me in a disadvantaged position from the very start, as
I have already mentioned before, all because everything in the world was
changing too fast and farming the old way was on the way out.
Something about this
is also written in this article, Farming today
compared to the old way , Anyhow, I and the
other youths that were working in the farms then, we were caught in this
disadvantaged position and some of us did something to improve our position, as
I am going to tell you in our next post, breaking away from my farm life.
See you soon.
